Raising Funds & Awareness for the United Black Fund Of Greater Cleveland Inc. Jan 21

Greater Cleveland Aquarium Partner in MLK Day Friend- and Fund-Raiser

Cleveland, OH –The Greater Cleveland Aquarium and the United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland Inc. (UBF) invite the public to a community fund- and friend-raiser on Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 21, 2019 – from 10am – 4pm. Every guest who chooses to donate $1 or more to UBF receives discounted, same-day $10 Aquarium admission.

In 2018, nearly 2,000 people turned out in support of UBF, a grant-making organization providing financial assistance to agencies that both empower and address challenges facing Greater Cleveland’s African American community. “For 36 years we’ve been helping to strengthen and build the capacity of grassroots organizations positively impacting Northeast Ohioans in need,” explains UBF Executive Director Cecil Lipscomb, CNM. “From Harvard Square Center’s computer lab to Mum-Ford’s eyecare services for low- and fixed-income patients, our more than 80 non-profit agency partners provide basic needs, education, workforce development training and opportunity to thousands of children, families and seniors annually.”

This is the fifth time the Aquarium has partnered with the United Black Fund for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Aquarium collaborates with other mission-driven organizations such as Drink Local. Drink Tap., Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center and Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland throughout the year. “United Black Fund helps make our community stronger and we’re proud to support their work,” Greater Cleveland Aquarium General Manager and Splash Fund Director Tami Brown.

New this year, the Aquarium will highlight African Americans influential in the fields of marine science and scuba diving throughout its galleries. “The achievements of these important figures is inspiring,” says Brown. “For example, Carl M. Brashear was the first African American to become a US Navy Master Diver despite having an amputated leg.” Guests can learn more about Brashear and other leaders by participating in an MLK Day “Search for Greatness” Scavenger Hunt for a chance to win an Aquarium annual family pass.

UBF volunteers will be stationed in the FirstEnergy Powerhouse Lobby on MLK Day to take donations and provide discounted admission vouchers. Both adults and children receive the general admission rate of $10 when donating at least $1 each. No pre-sales are available and the discount is valid January 21, 2019 only.
